The Vivo T1 5G is a promising newcomer to the T series

Vivo has introduced the T Series, a new line of smartphones geared towards the younger population. The manufacturer says that the gadgets in this series provide high performance for under $20,000.

The Vivo T1 5G, the first handset, has already been released in India. It costs 16k in India and is available in two colors. It is equipped with a powerful processor and a huge battery. Is the Vivo T1 5G a good investment?

Design

The Vivo T1 5G is a striking device, particularly in the Rainbow Fantasy colorway. The handset features a colorful gradient that changes colors of blue and orange depending on how the light hits the back of the phone, as its name shows.

In addition, the smartphone features a boxy form with a flat frame and a leveled back. The device’s squared-off camera module makes it stand out and Vivo has done a good job with the design of its latest challenger.

The T1 5G’s plastic body isn’t immediately noticeable, which speaks much about the phone’s in-hand experience. The phone’s back has a smooth feel, and the handset’s blocky frame provides a secure hold in the hand. Unlike most phones in this price range, the T1 5G has a matte surface, which means the rear of the phone is less prone to smudges.

Battery Life, Software, and Performance

The Snapdragon 695 CPU powers the Vivo T1 5G, which also has UFS 2.2 storage and LPDDR4x RAM. Now, I’ve previously written a comparison piece comparing the Vivo T1 5G’s performance to that of the Dimensity 810 and Snapdragon 680 chipsets, so go check it out.

However, for the sake of this review, you should know that the T1 5G is a capable performer, with little to complain about for customers seeking a reliable daily driver.

The SoC isn’t as powerful as, say, the Snapdragon 765G or Snapdragon 768G mobile platforms featured in similar-priced smartphones like the iQOO Z3.

To put it another way, while the SD695’s CPU isn’t bad, the GPU can’t quite push demanding games to equivalent graphics and FPS settings.

Take, for example, BGMI, which is optimized for HD and High visuals and frame rates. On the iQOO Z3, you can adjust the graphics and frame rate to HDR and Ultra. To be sure, the Vivo T1 5G works wonderfully, but it’s not the quickest Android phone around Rs 20,000.

Focused on gaming

On the software front, the smartphone runs a bespoke FunTouch OS v12 overlay on top of Android 12. Although most of the pre-installed apps can be deleted, the UI is littered with bloatware.

Aside from that, the UI is sleek and provides a plethora of customization options, including a built-in theme shop and a slew of the home screen and lock screen adjustments. The smartphone, however, does not allow third-party icon packs, which is a disappointment.

Aside from that, the phone has most, if not all, of the standard Android features, such as Google’s Digital Wellbeing suite, a built-in screen recorder, a dedicated gaming mode, and the option to encrypt installed applications. The T in Vivo’s name refers to ‘Turbo,’ implying that the phone is intended for gaming.

On the battery aspect, the Vivo T1 5G comes with a 5,000mAh battery that easily got me to the end of a long workday.

Unfortunately, the phone comes with an 18W fast charge that takes a long time to fully charge the battery pack — 1 hour and 40 minutes to be exact. Given that comparable phones come with quicker charging 33W bricks, this is surprising.

All variations include 128 GB of storage, while RAM options include 4 GB, 6 GB, and 8 GB.

The phone comes pre-installed with Android 12 with the FunTouch OS, and it performs admirably.

With audio, the Vivo T1 5G offers a single speaker with average sound quality. However, the sound becomes distorted at maximum volume.

The call quality has been just about good as well. The gadget only supports two 5G bands, which is much less than what other firms in this price range are offering.

Cameras

The Vivo T1 5G has a triple camera arrangement on the rear, which includes a 50MP Samsung JN1 sensor, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth lens. The gadget has a 16MP front-facing camera for selfies.

During the day, the primary camera of the T1 5G shoots high-quality photos with a lot of detail in the frame. The camera’s color science favors bold tones, thus the photos are rarely exact representations of the scene.

Thankfully, the gadget does a good job of bringing out the shadows in the shot, and the sensor locks on to the focus swiftly. However, the quality of the shots degrades dramatically at night, and even using the designated night mode, the images were filled with noise.

The selfie camera takes amazing self-portraits with lots of information. At a closer cut, the photographs have superb clarity, and the smartphone matches the subject’s skin tone to a tee.

Unfortunately, neither an UltraWide angle nor a telephoto sensor is included with the Vivo T1 5G. Instead, the phone has a 2MP macro sensor that allows users to get extremely close to their objects.

In terms of video, the phone can capture footage of up to 1080p quality at 30 or 60 frames per second. The smartphone’s video recording skills aren’t the finest in the sector, and it adds a lot to the image.

VERDICT

The Vivo T1 strives to be all things to all people, with features including a high refresh rate display, Snapdragon 600-series CPU, many cameras, and a large battery, all for less than Rs 20,000.

However, when we examine these traits thoroughly, we cannot overlook the fact that they have a disadvantage. The phone’s display is an LCD screen, the camera stack lacks an ultraWide sensor, and it takes a while to completely charge.
